More than 12 million school-age children have vision problems.
Brian, age 4, was screened by Prevent Blindness North Carolina at his church-based preschool. His parents had not noticed any signs that Brian had a vision problem. Yet Brian could not pass the vision screening, and he was referred to an eye care professional for a full exam.
The eye doctor diagnosed Brian with a cataract in his left eye. As a result of the cataract, Brian was also diagnosed with farsightedness and amblyopia (lazy eye). Surgery removed the cataract and Brian also received glasses to help correct his farsightedness and amblyopia.
