Florida School Requirements for Children's Vision

  • Florida requires a vision screening
  • Frequency: Students in grades kindergarten, 1, 3, and 6 and students entering Florida schools for the first time in grades kindergarten through 5

Requires vision screening shall be provided, at a minimum, to students in grades kindergarten, 1, 3 and 6 and students entering Florida schools for the first time in grades kindergarten through 5.

Florida Administrative Code §64F-6.003

Each county health department shall develop, jointly with the district school board and the local school health advisory committee, a school health services plan; and the plan must include, at a minimum, provisions for vision screening. There must be provisions for referral and follow-up of suspected or confirmed health problems by the local county health department, consultation with the student's parent or guardian regarding the need for health attention, maintenance of records on incidents of health problems, corrective measures taken, and other information. Health information will be provided by the school health nurses, when necessary. A nonpublic school may request to participate in the school health services program. A student will be exempt from any of these services if his or her parent or guardian requests such exemption in writing.
