James is now wearing glasses and goes to an eye care professional for regular eye exams to check his progress. Thanks to the detection of his vision problem at a certified Prevent Blindness America vision screening, James will have a chance to be a star on the field and at school.

James is an energetic five-year-old. Like other boys his age, he loves to play with trucks, ride his bike and play baseball.

James participated in a vision screening at his preschool conducted by Prevent Blindness Iowa volunteers. The certified screeners noticed right away that James had a problem seeing out of one eye and referred him to an eye doctor for a complete exam. The eye care professional determined James had amblyopia. This sight-threatening condition can be treated if detected early enough. Because James had learned to adapt to his vision problems by using his good eye, his parents had no idea that James was losing vision in one eye.
