Valentin's Story

From 2002-2009, Prevent Blindness America’certified vision screeners screened more than 15 million children, referring approximately 1.4 million for comprehensive eyecare.
Valentin, age 4, was one of the 40,000 children that received a Prevent Blindness-certified vision screening in a North Carolina preschool this year. According to his teacher, Valentin had been having a great deal of difficulty with his class work prior to the school’s vision screening. Unlike most of the other students, he was unable to complete many of the classroom activities. His problems had become so severe that the school was preparing to have him evaluated for learning disabilities.
Before an evaluation could be arranged, Valentin received a certified vision screening and was referred to an eye care professional for a follow-up exam. His eye doctor confirmed that he did indeed have vision problems, with astigmatism being the most severe. Valentin received glasses to help correct his vision.
Valentin showed immediate improvement at school. He was able to complete his work and pay attention to his teacher. His “focus” had improved tremendously! He is no longer being considered for evaluation because his true problem was detected and treated, and at a very critical time for learning. Needless to say, Valentin’s parents and teacher were thrilled.
